This One's for the Potter-Heads

Posted on Aug 6 2005
Last week, for the second time in my life as a mother, I completely neglected my children for two entire days. The last time I did this was when Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix came out; and I have no doubt that I will do it again when the concluding book in the Harry Potter series comes out in a few years (oh please let it be soon). After all, real life has no place in your mind when you are off adventuring with the most trouble-prone adolescents in all the Wizarding world.

Up Against Superheroes and Princesses

Posted on May 31 2005
There's a lot in today's world that tests our sanity and our resilience everyday. Wars, politics, crime, terrorism and our children. However, our children alone have the power to bestow upon us the gifts of thinning gray hair, ulcers and frown-lines so deep they would bring Estee Lauder and her buddies to their knees. Over the past six years, I have heard so many confident declarations and irreverent questions that I am amazed I still react to them. Every now and then I think I've heard it all and a feeling of supermomdom sets in. I feel invincible, like I can take any crazy moment and make it right. Then I get thrown a curve ball that sends me right back to where I started. In the Parenting aisle at the library, leafing desperately through those know-it-all parenting guides.

Out of the Lenses of Babes

Posted on Apr 28 2005
The past month has been unusually bountiful for me, entertainment wise. From the empowering lows of the documentary Born into Brothels, to the bouncing-off-the-walls energy of the Broadway musical Mama Mia, to John Stewart's insightful and irreverent stand up comedy, I feel like I've been on a performing arts roller coaster. It's going to be impossible to go back to being excited about watching DVDs on the treadmill.

"What is Romance?" and Other Post-Valentine's Day Dilemmas

Posted on Apr 4 2005
For most of my post-adolescent life, February 15th has been a day of huge relief for me. The pressure of being romantic on February 14th (and sometimes the pressure of not being romantic) has always been too much for me to bear. But this year I won a minor victory. I forgot it was Valentines Day. Really, just completely forgot about it.

Chadda Tries to Bend it like Austen

Posted on Feb 23 2005
To be fair, Aishwarya Rai (did she really gain twenty pounds for this role?) plays Lalita with sincerity and a fair amount of restraint, which is a huge achievement for someone whose previous displays of emotion included shrill shrieks and a vein dangerously popping in her neck. It isn't her fault that Lalita has no real struggles and whole lot of entitlement.

The Future Of Hindi Films Not So Black Anymore!

Posted on Feb 12 2005
Amitabh Bachchan shows us with this role what the Bachchan-mania is all about. His Mr. Sahai makes all those myriad roles we sat through over the past few years, worth the pain. For a few moments, when we first meet him, he starts to be Amitabh Bachchan, but then he loses himself in Mr. Sahai and becomes the magician obsessed with his magic.
